Conflict of Interest

Every major breastfeeding organization in the world has IBCLCs on their Boards or in upper level administration. This does not pose an issue in openly declared medicinal organizations that exert medical control over lives of women in today’s world. Yet there is a problem when IBCLCs infiltrate organizations that are declared as lay maternal organizations. Hidden medical agenda does not have a place in any public or private organization that gives ideas to the general public that it promotes interests of women and mothers.

Board of Directors of La Leche League International has many IBCLCs on it. A few years ago you could see who they are, but now you can read only their names and seach IBCLC database to reveal who are the members with conflict of interest that is not openly declared to the public.

Breastfeeding USA was founded by many IBCLCs who came out of LLLI. This organization clearly positions itself as a lay counselor group yet all of their materials and agenda strongly promote and support medicinal view of breastfeeding and the interests of society,  not individual mothers.

IBCLCs are not trained to contemplate on their professional influence on women that may have negative consequences. Nor do they get training to differentiate their roles as medical proffessionals and private citizens or breastfeeding mothers. All of this poses serious ethical questions of professional power that stands to guard the interests of dominant groups in society and their effect on women, historically non-dominant group which has been exploited and continues being exploited, especially, for its reproductive powers.
